Sunday Sauce

Updated: Jan 17, 2021

Like most Italians, growing up we always had sauce on Sundays. My mom makes the best sauce, I have so many memories of waiting for the sauce to bubble so I could dip a piece of bread in and sneak a taste. The first rule of sauce is: NEVER stir the sauce once it's cooking. Sunday Sauce is a really whole thing, everyone has their rituals for making their sauce and everyone has their own "secret recipe", this one is mine.

What You'll Need:

  • 1 Package of Ground Beef

  • 2 to 3 Mild Italian Sausage

  • 1/3 Cup of Olive Oil

  • Salt and Pepper (to taste)

  • Splash of Red Wine

  • 3 Tbs. of Each, Chopped - Fresh Basil, Oregano, and Parsley

  • 1 Large Garlic Clove, Minced

  • 6 oz. of Tomato Paste

  • 2 Large Can of Tuttorosso (28 oz.)

  • 1 Package of Pomi Tomato Sauce (26.46 oz.)

Instructions:

  1. Start by browning your ground beef, using a spoon or spatula to break up the beef as it cooks.

  2. Once the beef is almost cooked completely, add your olive oil and sausages/

  3. The sausages will start to brown and as they start cooking halfway, flip them to brown on the other side.

  4. Now you are ready to add your garlic, salt, pepper, chopped herbs, and wine.

  5. Once these are all simmering, add your can of tomato paste. Then fill that can with water and add the water to your sauce as well.

  6. Stir.

  7. Bring to a simmer, then add your Tuttorosso and Pomi sauces, sprinkle grated parmesan on top, stir, and cover.

  8. Let your sauce cook on low for at least 3 hours, it's important not to let the sauce burn so keep the temp low enough that the bottom won't get too hot. And - never stir your sauce until you're almost ready to serve.

This sauce goes great with any pasta - our favorites are raviolis and rigatoni. They key is to choose a pasta that compliments and pairs well with your sauce. Feel free to get creative with this recipe and make it your own, enjoy!

This dish is perfect to serve with salad and ciabatta or garlic bread too!
